Bittersweet

Happy New Year! Wishing you all peace, health and joy in 2016!

It’s been a great start to Mom’s Big Year so far!

I kicked off January 1st doing what I’ll be doing a LOT of this year… …..Birding!  (Just writing that puts a *huge* smile on my face.)

I joined 18 members of our local bird club at my favorite local spot, The Howard County Conservancy at Mt. Pleasant. Since Friday, a couple of exciting birds have appeared on the scene at various local hotspots, including a Ross’s Goose and a Redhead Duck- both unusual for our area! Check out the barred owl too!

Despite the exciting start to the Big Year, a cloud has been looming large lately. January 4th was the anniversary of my cousins’ tragic accident 14 years ago. (More details found on the “Why a Mom’s Big Year?” page.) I miss them more than words can describe and wish the girls were here with me as I embark on this journey into 2016.

My friends and family members have been a enormous source of strength for me.  They know exactly what I need, when I need it.  My only hope is that I find the opportunity to return the favor. As I kicked off the Big Year this weekend, my sweet & lovely friend Susan showed up with a care package for me to use out in the field during my birding adventures.  And then super-thoughtful Elyse showed up with a bluebird good luck charm.  I will carry it with me throughout my journey for sure!

Aren’t they simply the sweetest?!

It’s gestures like these that take away some of the ‘bitter’ for me and inject some of the ‘sweet’ in its place.

Grateful.

  1. Very touching post. We wish you all the best in your big year! Diana would be just as proud as Barb and I. Love you all.
