Break in the birding

I’ll get back to the report on the Texas trip soon! But this weekend was reserved for some overdue family fun time.  While Mom’s Big Year includes a ton of birding (of course), it also includes a ton of “mommying”.  And this weekend it was all about the mommy stuff.  Continue reading

Text me…

Said my final goodbyes to the kids last night before bed.. Texas here I come!

I gave my youngest one final kiss on the forehead, turned out the light, and started walking out of his room. With his eyes half-closed as he began to enter dreamland he quietly uttered,

“Text me when you get to 300,  okay mom?”

I can tell he REALLY gets it. 🙂 and boy do I feel loved!

Happy New Year! Wishing you all peace, health and joy in 2016!

It’s been a great start to Mom’s Big Year so far!

I kicked off January 1st doing what I’ll be doing a LOT of this year… …..Birding!  (Just writing that puts a *huge* smile on my face.)

I joined 18 members of our local bird club at my favorite local spot, The Howard County Conservancy at Mt. Pleasant. Since Friday, a couple of exciting birds have appeared on the scene at various local hotspots, including a Ross’s Goose and a Redhead Duck- both unusual for our area! Check out the barred owl too!

Knock at the door?

This afternoon I heard what I thought was knocking at our front door. Figuring it was the UPS man with a holiday package, I flung open the door and was surprised to find no one there.  Soon after, I heard the knocking again and discovered it was coming from the other side of the house. I peered out the kitchen window and found a hairy woodpecker drumming away on our cedar siding! She flew away before I could get a pic, but this gives you a general idea of what I saw…

Not the holiday package I was expecting.. but I’ll take it any day!

Just pleeeease don’t look too closely at the holes in our siding.  ;-P

Thanks to fellow birder, Bonnie Ott, for the use of her photo.

Enjoy the start to the holiday season, everyone!

We had no business going out…

This weekend’s calendar was bursting at the seams with homework, science projects, basketball games, holiday baking commitments, orchestra practice, scout merit badge requirements, and several not-to-be-missed holiday gatherings.  Tis the season, right??
